چکیده

The interlaminar-toughened CFRP composite, T800H/3900-2, has interlaminar resin layers, whose thickness is about 20 mm. The interlaminar layer was evaluated quantitatively using an ultrasonic micro-spectrometer (UMSM) for the determination of the elastic constants, which is quite difficult by other techniques. At first, the composite was ground to remove the outermost CFRP layer, and the interlaminar layer was exposed. Then the acoustic reflection coefficients at a small spot on the surface of the interlaminar layer were measured using the UMSM. The magnitude of the reflection coefficients is related to the properties of the layer. Hence, the elastic constants of the interlaminar layer were obtained appropriately through the fitness of theory to the magnitude of the reflection coefficients. Moreover, the obtained Young’s modulus was compared with that measured by tensile tests.

Evaluation of the Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastics Interfacial Behavior by using Ultrasonic Wave Propagation Method

In this paper, ultrasonic wave propagation in three phases (3P) of composite materials was investigated. The simulation was conducted by PZFlex analysis code, a time domain finite element program. The reflection and transmission characteristics with different shapes of middle layer between glass fiber and epoxy resin are investigated in order to understand basic ultrasonic behavior of energy di...

Ultrasonic wave propagation in the corner section of composite laminate structure: Numerical simulations and experiments

Two-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments are presented to examine the ultrasonic wave propagation behavior in the corner section of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminate structures. The numerical model consists of a right-angle corner section of CFRP laminate immersed in water and subjected to the ultrasonic wave incidence from its inner or outer side. The anisotrop...

Adaptive Multigrid Methods for Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Optimization in an Aircraft and design of integrated Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Systems

Nowadays, advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are being applied to many aircraft structures in order to improve performance and reduce weight. Most composites have strong, stiff fibres in a matrix which is weaker and less stiff. However, aircraft wings can break due to Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) oscillations or material fatigue. Material inspectio...

Porosity characterization of CFRP parts by ultrasonic and X-ray tomographic non-destructive methods

Porosity is a result of a deficiency in the production process that could lead into the mechanical degradation of CFRP composite structures. Therefore, some checkpoints for determining its presence during part manufacturing have to be established, verifying that precise threshold values are not exceeded. Currently, porosity characterization is carried out by an indirect way using ultrasonic tec...

A Fiber Optic Doppler Sensor and Its Application in Debonding Detection for Composite Structures

Debonding is one of the most important damage forms in fiber-reinforced composite structures. This work was devoted to the debonding damage detection of lap splice joints in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures, which is based on guided ultrasonic wave signals captured by using fiber optic Doppler (FOD) sensor with spiral shape. Interferometers based on two types of laser sources, ...
